Julia Dingle Lemon was born in Manning, South Carolina in 1895. Her mother, also named Julia, was a slave. If Grandmother were alive, she would be 115. She and my Grandfather, Charlie Dingle, had six children. Charlie Dingle was from Davis Station, South Carolina. His ancestors were Free Blacks, tradesmen who purchased their Freedom. Unfortunately, Grandfather Charlie was killed in a tragic accident somewhere around 1930. Grandmother was left to raise her family during the harsh Depression era in the Jim Crow South.

Despite all of Grandmother Julia’s hardships and struggles in life, she did well. My Grandmother instilled Christianity and a work ethic in all of her children. My mother has memories of rising before dawn and heading out to the fields where she would typically pick 100 pounds of cotton a day for a measly 50 cents. That money would be judiciously meted out toward household expenses. My Grandmother bestowed all of her children with a love of reading and learning. All six of her offspring graduated high school and went on to obtain a higher education. In 1942, my Grandmother got remarried, to Preston Lemon. They both passed away in 1978. Two of my Grandmother’s children are alive today: my Mother – Esther Dingle Dove and my Aunt – Rhoda Dingle. They are both college graduates who have earned their Master’s Degrees, and they are both retired school teachers.

Shown here is a photo of my mother (center) and her friends, Shirley (left) and another Esther, on the right. It was taken on Mother’s Day 2010 in Hampton, Virginia after church service at Bethel AME. All three of these women are from Manning, South Carolina, all three have connections to Hampton, and all three went to Allen University, located in Columbia, South Carolina. Amazingly, both Esthers were in the class of 1952 and Shirley was in the class of 1960. Talk about ties that bind! Talk about motherhood, sisterhood and friendship. Talk about legacies that last! Kudos to these beautiful women. And peace and blessings always to my Grandmother - Julia Dingle Lemon.

Here in Philly it’s Fringe Festival time and that means “Little Girl Blue” is back for a command performance. I am honored and humbled to say Bassist Warren Oree will join me with original music on his acoustic upright double bass. Once again I will reprise the role of “Little Girl Blue” as I portray 17 characters in this gut-wrenching, twisting tale of a Black woman’s sojourn across the modern American urban landscape. Experience the highs, the lows, the good, the bad, the ugly and the humorous. Everything gets underway Saturday night, Sept. 12th, 8 p.m. at the Community Education Center’s Meeting House Theater located at 3500 Lancaster Avenue, Phila., PA 19104. The evening’s MC is Radio Personality J. Michael Harrison, host of “The Bridge” on WRTI-FM, 90.1. By the way, this new performance photo was taken by the amazing photographer Hannan Saleh. Tickets @ the door; $15 each. Call (215) 877-5165 for more info. Please come out and support us. Asante Sana. Michael has ascended to a better place; he is out of all the tremendous pain and suffering he endured in this world. What a huge sacrifice and debt he paid for his musical genius, extraordinary showmanship, business prowess and marketing savvy. He left an astounding legacy and will always be remembered as the best of the best in a category all his own, in a universe all his own. Despite personal problems and scandals, Michael Jackson will always be loved. Even in death, his huge contributions continue to reverberate the world over.

Without a doubt, this week will go down in history as “The Week That Was.” Innocent Civilians shot down and killed for protesting the Iranian election, which was surely no more than a farce; unprecedented bloodshed in Iraq; the tragic fatal DC metro crash, where nine precious souls lost their lives (may they rest in peace); the unsavory exploits of South Carolina’s Governor and the ensuing personal and political debacle; the death of Ed McMahon (may he rest in peace); the passing of Farrah Fawcett (may she also rest in peace) & Oh My God! The King Is Dead!!!!!; The King of Pop is Dead!!!!! Michael Jackson Dead at 50 apparently from Cardiac Arrest!!!!; Rest in Peace, Michael Jackson; Rest in Peace. We love you and we will miss you.
Asante Sana. Seeing the fashions of the 70’s: platform shoes, loud prints, tube tops, all stylishly worn to compliment huge Afros’ and do you remember sideburns? Yes, the men looked so manly and sexy with those thick sideburns! An urban romance, where the man was a man, always treated the woman like a lady – opening doors, pouring drinks, buying ice cream for her children, bringing new appliances for the household, and helping Little Mama pay her pay rent and handle those rough boys.

All these years later, with Curtis Mayfield’s strings welling up in the background and Gladys Knight’s sultry contralto vibrating in the foreground, I love hearing the words uttered by “Claudine’s” leading man, Rupert P. Marshall, portrayed by the acting monolith James Earl Jones: “You’ve got to make the best of each day ‘cause when you’re dead life isn’t worth living.” Enough said.Lady Dove aka Pheralyn Dovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00894032079995205949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-458967763256914578.post-24820153081050333552009-05-27T06:18:00.000-07:002009-05-27T06:22:53.331-07:00HOLD FAST TO DREAMS<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOzclhdYn7nR7bN7SSR3fIX_Ulx_wOpopfJx0oOPInftQ-7nerJQ9Ke2AeQrHcnkmUpjbyJHgQdQwoB1YcN1IwZk4MBP_uqIgr6Grok9w-6ntozN7fuIcWwELyFXnysIKW2RJ_7oWydxC0/s320/pink-garden-roses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340493227799404482" />
Far away there in the sunshine
are my highest aspirations.

I may not reach them, but I can look up
and see their beauty, believe in them,
and try to follow where they lead.

Louisa May Alcott

Lady Dove aka Pheralyn Dovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00894032079995205949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-458967763256914578.post-17533326437603716182009-04-27T12:01:00.000-07:002009-04-27T12:10:35.339-07:00STELLAR EXHIBITION CLOSES SUN., MAY 3RD<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy8QpR9iJAgMtTr1Gdr7jVSTZjU3HvrMLktKt7yEmfsHbRMTNE0dj175KF-nmRTo0E9ysXMYhnS2DsDJIswJQdnqFCIh7BLrUwfYmzu4FsHVUb7LGMnIhrUy9aku8DTtSugMvZiupifw73/s320/rosa-parks2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329449432765331778" />
Don’t Miss America I AM: The African American Imprint

Rosa Parks is featured in the exhibition, "America I AM: The African American Imprint" which is on view through Sunday, May 3rd at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. But it has. I am not as obedient as I should be to the acknowledgement of the acceleration of time. However it is time to keep up. Now is the time. No time like the present. Time is time. Time to reflect. Time to move forward. My performances of "Little Girl Blue" last month at the Community Education Center in Philadelphia were a blessing, truly a dream come true. My ace collaborator, Bassist and Composer Warren Oree, really tore the house down. Everybody loved him. He also plays African percussion during these performances and the mix with his acoustic double bass is, well, awesome. My role as the actor and spoken word artist in this play is truly elevated by Warren's presence; we are developing this piece individually and collectively. Inspiration and motivation work wonders in helping artists max out their talent and I must say Warren is one of the most inspirational cats I have ever had the privilege of calling my cultural collaborator. And I am also so humbled and fortunate to call him my friend. As an actor, I can honestly say I have done some of my best work with Warren up on that stage with me, encouraging me all the way.

I must admit that over these past few years, "Little Girl Blue" has truly grown to become an obsession with me. I am the vessel that is channeling these poignant and triumphant stories. The characters, the scenes, the ideas - all seem to come through me and not necessarily from me in the logical accepted norm of brainwork, thought synthesis and application. This is an unconscious phenomenon that has become tangible in the form of a stage production. I realize I am being used. I am being moved in a spiritual way. Even though I wrote this saga, where I portray 17 characters that symbolize a Black woman's coming of age and survival against all types of indignation and abuse, I cannot take full credit for it. And who knew that domestic violence would take on such prominence on the world stage at this particular time? Woman abuse has been prevalent for centuries but is currently in the headlines because of certain celebrities' personal lives coming under unfortunate public exposure, judgement and scrutiny.

Anyway, because of this realization that I am dealing with an obsession, I will transform "Little Girl Blue" into its own blog. And return to keeping "Cultural Collideoscope" entries more universal and not necessarily about me. Starting now.. . . yes... the transformation journey is starting now. Look for "Little Girl Blue" in its new home soon. Stay tuned for enhanced episodes of "Cultural Collideoscope." Asante Sana. March 21st & 22nd

Following my passion for telling stories led me to write and produce my one-woman show, “Little Girl Blue.” It will be in Philadelphia March 21st & 22nd. “Little Girl Blue” is a montage of monologues and spoken-word poetry set to music composed and performed by the awesome bassist Warren Oree. Multi-media segments heighten the sensory impulses of this searing saga of the 17 characters I portray.

“Little Girl Blue” is not for sissies. It’s hardcore truth, in your face and not always pretty. This work-in-progress explores themes of sexual abuse, domestic violence, female sexuality and self-esteem. It deals with African American social consciousness and empowerment. It deals with Black love, relationships, family secrets and the unbreakable bonds that characterize the strength and resilience of the African American people. Even though there is a lot of heavy stuff going on in this piece, there are lighthearted, humorous moments intertwined with these raw, intense tales. “Little Girl Blue” reveals decades of pain, pathos and desperation endured until she reconciles her past and emerges victorious and magnificently transformed. Davis’s book signing for First Friday. Tribal Home Gallery will host the affair for Anthony’s latest publication,“I Ain’t Lying: Stories from West Philly to West Africa.” The location is: 56 North Third Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more detailed information, call Tribal Home Gallery at: (215) 592-4215. Refreshments and African drumming will be in the mix. Readings will commence at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Even if you aren’t in town for Friday’s reading and signing, I highly recommend this book. I read it from cover-to-cover and was completely engaged with the turning of each page. Anthony’s descriptive language made me feel as if I was experiencing each episode myself. I laughed and cried and sighed. There were stories about living on Alden Street in West Philadelphia; there were stories about going to Catholic School; there were stories about going to an HBCU (Historically Black College/University); there was the very spiritual story about his journey to Africa. . . and so much more. You’ll just have to read it for yourself. It’s crunch time – lots of running around - pulling it all together: tweaking the costume and accessories, assembling all the props, taking care of the insurance, touching bases with Jeanne Bradley at the Ethical Society, making final press calls, picking up technical equipment from Scribe Video, coordinating box office details with John Emory and folks at the Fringe Festival…..checking in with my marketing people and stage crew…..They say it takes a village to raise a child, and believe me, it takes a village to mount a one-woman show!

Yesterday, I met JoAnna Turner at the Ethical Society; we did a technical run through. Her son, Miles Turner, a member of the stage crew, was gracious enough to come along and provide some much needed assistance. Film maker and photographer Bill Sneed was also at the tech rehearsal, lending support and great advice as well. JoAnna has poured a lot of love, creativity and technical ingenuity into this project and I trust and pray everything will work out as planned. Last night after the rehearsal, my sister Esther and I went over all the fine details of the program. She too has stepped up with her design expertise to produce a program that will also work as a wonderful keepsake.

Today, I’m doing a run through with the production’s musical director, bassist/composer Warren Oree. Over the years this “work in progress” has evolved into my tour-de-force. Monologues and poetry bring 17 alter egos to life in this raw, searing tale of a Black woman’s odyssey. Yes, I actually portray 17 characters! (There are 5 major players and 12 supporting characters.) Bassist Warren Oree has written an original soundtrack for “Little Girl Blue.” I am so honored and blessed to haveWarren collaborate with me during performances; the live music really takes “Little Girl Blue” to another level. This 90-minute spoken-word play also includes multi-media elements and I have to thank my technical director, JoAnna Turner, for commandeering this aspect of the show. However my thoughts and prayers are still with these legendary entertainment icons and their loved ones. Especially Isaac Hayes.

Not only have I been a huge Isaac Hayes fan since he emerged as a superstar during the early 1970s, I was also perhaps the last print journalist that he granted an interview to prior to his death. We spoke on the telephone Wednesday, August 6th, from him home in Memphis, Tennessee. Subsequently, the article that started out as a feature story evolved into an obituary that appeared on the front page of the Philadelphia Tribune on Tuesday, August 12th.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE LAST WORDS HE SHARED WITH ME:

What about the stroke you suffered a few years ago? How’s the recovery process coming along?
“I had an illness – had a stroke – but I got past that. The stroke was due to undetected high blood pressure. I had to learn how to do everything over again. I couldn’t count. I had to relearn how to read. I had to learn how to swim. Everything. I forgot everything. My advice is that if you’ve got high blood pressure, you’d better watch it. Watch very carefully.”

Mr. Hayes said he even had to relearn all of his music and that during recent concerts he had to place the words to the songs on a music stand onstage.
“In order to get well,” he continued, “I just did all the programs they do when you have a stroke. I ate right after that. You get a stroke, you eat right then.”

How’s Your Energy Level? How is Life After the Stroke?
“It’s good. I swim now. I haven’t mastered it yet but I will. The program they have me on – therapy – all kind of stuff like that. I’m getting stronger and stronger every day. I’m strong, mentally.

“You have to tell people about these things – strokes and all that stuff. When I had that stroke, I didn’t know nothin' and I had to come back. Since then I’ve been doing gigs and all that stuff now. Three or four weeks ago I was in Pittsburgh. I had strings and all that stuff. I did a show there and blew the people away.”

How did you come up with the music for the soundtrack to the movie “Shaft”? Can you describe your creative process?
“When I wrote Shaft it was a good time. Gordon Parks commissioned me to do it. It took three days to do the music. On the first day I wrote the music. On the second day I did the horns and the strings. And on the third day I wrote the lyrics. Yeah, I wrote that album in three days. I just did it.”

What are your fondest memories about “Shaft” and the Academy Award?
“When I won the Academy Award, my grandmother was my date. I met Charlie Chaplin that night too. He had been in exile. When I went over to his table, he congratulated me and all that stuff. My grandmother told me, ‘Don’t worry about it. You gonna’ win.’ When they called my name and I went on stage, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Joel Grey were backstage. Sammy was saying, ‘I told you! I told you!’ That was a great time.”

Where Do You Keep Your Oscar Statue?
“I got it here. I keep it in my living room. They’re so many awards; I’ve gotten all kinds of awards since then.”

“All kinds of awards” indeed. And now, my beloved, the legendary Isaac Hayes is the recipient of his greatest award, which is actually his reward in heaven: Yes, Isaac Hayes’ greatest reward is his ascension from this earth plane to heaven. May God Rest Your Soul Isaac Hayes. God Rest Your Mighty, Mighty Soul.

Asante Sana & Amen,
Lady Dove aka Pheralyn Dovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00894032079995205949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-458967763256914578.post-39973388360366919122008-08-12T13:04:00.000-07:002008-08-12T13:18:07.064-07:00Lady Dove's article on Issac Hayes in The Philadelphia TribuneClick here to read the article I wrote on the late, great Issac Hayes that appeared in today’s Philadelphia Tribune.Lady Dove aka Pheralyn Dovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00894032079995205949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-458967763256914578.post-17921261535160353092008-08-11T07:21:00.000-07:002008-08-11T07:25:15.478-07:00Rest In Peace Issac Hayes - August 20, 1942 – August 10, 2008 - Part I of III received a call from Joe “Butterball” Tamburro, Program Director at Clear Channel’s WDAS-FM, on Sunday, August 10th informing me that Isaac Hayes had passed away. Lord have mercy. I had just interviewed Isaac Hayes last week.

One of the most electrifying performers and legendary icons in the history of soul music, Isaac Hayes was 65 years old; it was just ten days prior to his 66th birthday. At the time of his death, Mr. Hayes was preparing for a reunion concert celebrating 50 years of Stax Records, along with his label mates William Bell, Eddie Floyd and the Bar-Kays. He had been scheduled to appear at Philadelphia’s Mann Music Center on Friday, August 15, 2008.

On Wednesday, August 6th, Mr. Hayes was gracious enough to give me a telephone interview in anticipation of the concert, for a freelance story I was contributing to the Philadelphia Tribune. What started out as a preview and feature article suddenly is an obituary, a tribute, an appreciation.

The epitome of cool, Mr. Hayes’ signature style was characterized by his clean-shaven head, dark glasses and at the height of his fame, the gold chains worn against his bare chest and taut torso. He first gained recognition as a songwriter and session artist for Stax Records, backing up such legendary singers as Otis Redding. Later, he became the label’s premiere act; the 1969 release of “Hot Buttered Soul” catapulted him into stardom. From 1997 to 2006 he originated the voice of “Chef,” a character on “South Park,” the Comedy Central animated television series.
As a singer-songwriter, film score composer, arranger, producer, band leader, and instrumentalist, Hayes contributed some of the most enduring contemporary music recorded during the last half of the 20th century, most notably the film score for the 1971 motion picture, Shaft, which garnered him a 1972 Academy Award and two Grammy Awards.
Also known as “Black Moses,” coined after the release of his 1971 album of the same title, Mr. Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He thrilled audiences with hits featuring lush arrangements, including “The Theme From Shaft,” “Never Can Say Goodbye,” “Do Your Thing,” “By the Time I Get To Phoenix,” “Walk on By,” “I Stand Accused,” “The Look of Love,” and a plethora of others. He was also a radio show host, and an actor of merit, having appeared in dozens of feature films. Not only is Isaac Hayes entertainment royalty he was actually coronated a king in the West African nation of Ghana because of his humanitarian efforts. Truly he will be missed. Thank God for the legacy he left behind.Lady Dove aka Pheralyn Dovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00894032079995205949noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-458967763256914578.post-57555563889222617682008-08-09T15:02:00.000-07:002008-08-09T15:11:40.765-07:00Rest In Peace Bernie Mac The comedian and actor, Bernie Mac passed away today at the age of 50. We went to the Jungle Island Theme Park and to the beach and to the pool. We walked along South Beach and we saw all the sights at the Lincoln Road Mall.

We visited the Old Dillard African American Museum in Fort Lauderdale, formerly Dillard High School, which was the first one in the area built exclusively to educate Black students. The museum’s Jazz Room featured memorabilia associated with the luminous alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley , an alum of the Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk bands and former music teacher at the Old Dillard High School. And, surprise of all surprises, the Jazz Room also mentioned Philadelphia’s own brilliant vibraphonist, Khan Jamal, claiming him as one of Florida’s most esteemed native sons, because although he was raised in Philadelphia, he was actually born in Jacksonville.

That Sunday morning, (Aug. 3rd) we had a happy good time in prayer, praise, music and worship, at the United Christian Church of Christ in Coconut Grove. My cousin, Dr. Marthenia Dingle Dupree, who is the pastor of the church and daughter of its founder, Bishop Irving Dingle, led the service. Then…like all good times…the Dingle Family Reunion Weekend had to end.

But I felt so blessed and so fulfilled I wasn’t even too tired to have a great day at work on Monday (Aug. 4th) with my esteemed colleagues in the Office of Strategic Partnerships. During my midday break, I meet up with my buddies Herb Green and Charlie DiPatri in the IT lab for our “write lunch.” We catch up on each others’ projects, encourage each other in our dreams and aspirations. At some point the conversation eases into a peaceful quietude. We all turn to face our computer screens. I begin to chip away ever so gently at this essay I’ve been working on for my next book project. Way too soon, it is time for us to return to our respective duties and stations.

After work, I am still pumped up, ultimately inspired enough to write this, my very first series of blog entries. It is such an honor to take you on this Cultural Collideoscope. Thanks for joining me. And please, stay along for the journey, my personal, transformation journey. Asante Sane. Abundant Blessings.
